Jobs Boost for Hull and Humber’s Young People
Around 350 jobs for young people will be created following the announcement that Hull and the Humber is set to receive substantial funding from the Government's Future Jobs Fund.
Around 350 jobs for young people will be created following the announcement that Hull and the Humber is set to receive substantial funding from the Government's Future Jobs Fund.
The funding will potentially see over two millions pounds heading to the city region to create jobs for 18-25 year olds. The job creation will focus on 'hotspot' areas across Hull and the Humber, providing jobs where they are needed the most. The new job opportunities will target those who have been out of work for more than a year or are in danger of becoming long-term unemployed.
The successful Future Jobs Fund bid, announced today (Wednesday, July 29), will provide a much-needed boost for the jobs market in the region and has been warmly welcomed by Richard Brough, chair of the area’s Work and Skills Board.
Richard Brough said: “This is fantastic news for Hull and the Humber and we are delighted that we will be able to provide hundreds of much-needed jobs for young people. The money will allow the creation of real jobs that provide these young people with the skills, experience and knowledge they need to join or return to the workforce.
“Jobs need to be provided across the city region and we are very pleased to be amongst the first successful bidders to the Future Jobs Fund. This is absolutely vital to making a difference to the lives of young people.”
The work on offer will see posts created in community settings, social enterprises and new and emerging sectors. The jobs, which will also provide wider community benefits, will include environmental posts, construction, social care and administration roles. As part of the terms of the funding, the jobs are guaranteed to last a minimum of six months.
The successful bid was submitted by the Humber Economic Partnership on behalf of a pan-Humber consortium of local authorities covering East Riding of Yorkshire, the city of Hull, North East Lincolnshire and North Lincolnshire and a range of voluntary and community sector partners.
The project also has the endorsement of the City Region’s Employment, Enterprise and Skills Board comprising major public and private sector leaders in the area, who will monitor the delivery of the job creation.
The Future Jobs Fund totals £1bn to be allocated over two years and aims to create 150,000 jobs across the UK, focusing on people aged between 18 and 24 and people living in deprived areas who have been out of work for a year.
Those gaining employment will be provided with a tailored package of support drawing on existing expertise and services available in Hull and the Humber.
HEP was one of six successful Yorkshire bidders in this first round of funding and around 1,500 jobs are expected to be created across Yorkshire. In the first round 182 bids were received, with 117 awarded funding to create up to 47,000 jobs.
Of the 117 bids, 62 were local authority-led. The others came from a mixture of public bodies, voluntary organisations, social enterprises and private companies.
